Into the Wild” is a print by Canadian wildlife artist Joseph Koensgen, illustrating the powerful presence and spirit of grizzly bears, inspired by his close observations of these animals and their natural habitat.
This painting was selected for the Ducks Unlimited Canada, National Art Portfolio in 2017, connecting it to wildlife conservation efforts and supporting Ducks Unlimited Canada’s mission.
Grizzly bears historically occupied a large portion of North America, from Alaska all the way into Mexico and as far east as Hudson’s Bay. Today they are found primarily in Western Canada, Alaska, and parts of the Northwestern United States. Their size and strength makes them one of the top predators on the land. They are mostly a solitary animal but will gather in large groups for the annual salmon run that happens on the West Coast. During recent trips to Vancouver, I had the pleasure of seeing grizzly bears up close in an enclosure that housed two orphaned bears on Grouse Mountain. This proximity was great for being able to see details of the bears and observe a bit of their behaviour. It was so inspiring that I decided to take that into a large painting that also reflected the mood the day had when I saw them.” Joseph Koensgen is a Canadian wildlife and nature artist.
