Statement from the artist: Waynaboozhoo, the trickster legend of the Anishinaabeg. My retellings of his origin and his end. His life of great adventure. Waynaboozhoo is a benevolent culture hero of the Anishinaabe tribe. He is well respected and one of the most prominent characters in Anishinaabeg culture. He is part man and part manitou, with many special gifts, like the power to shape-shift into whatever form he wishes. He is a champion who is loved by the people but also has his many shortcomings and follies. I created these paintings as a personal goal to further educate myself on the traditional stories of the Ojibwe, so I can be more knowledgeable of my culture, reclaim my identity, and teach present and future generations about the beauty of Indigenous storytelling. With the stories of Waynaboozhoo, my hope is to inspire more interest in the legends of the past, so that we can keep our heritage strong and further decolonize the present.
