F. Carmichael Born in Orillia, Ontario – it was there Carmichael formed his passion for the north. His love of art caused Carmichael to leave Toronto to study at the Ontario College of Art at the age of 20. Apprenticing as a commercial artist at Grip Ltd. He met other artists who would later form the Group of Seven, including Tom Thomson. Carmichael was the youngest member of the Group, but went on to found the Ontario Society for Painters in Watercolours along with A.J. Casson and F.H. Brigden. Carmichael later taught at the Ontario College of Art. A family man, Carmichael had a cottage on Cranberry Bay in the La Cloche hills. He would share his cabin with the other Group members making a central point for paints trips to sketch and paint La Cloche. When A.Y. Jackson learned of potential logging in the area around Trout Lake, Carmichael, Casson and Jackson took action to have the area designated as a nature preserve. In their honour, there are lakes in the area named after each of them.
About the Print:
This vertical frame features three prints capturing the vibrant shoreline and lakes of Georgian Bay. These limited-edition prints have been reproduced from an original paintings by Group of Seven artist Franklin Carmichael. The top print depicts the vibrant “Pigeon Lake” surrounded by rolling hills, each of their shadows cast along the water. The lake is one of many that make up the Kawartha lakes area and the Trent-Severn Waterway in Ontario. The centre print titled “Light and Shadow” captures more sunlit rolling hills with a body or water running through them. The bottom print depicts a rocky shoreline along a lake with a few coniferous trees in the distance, a typical sight to see within the “Island Georgian Bay” area. A charcoal grey trim outlines each print, with a white top mat. They are framed using a textured concaved brown moulding with a double silver lip.
