Although some goaltenders before him would venture out of their crease Plante pioneered the act of aggressively skating behind the net to play the puck. Jacques literally wrote the book on goaltending when he published the highly revered “On Goaltending” later in his life. The book discussed topics ranging from equipment maintenance to the technical details of netminding , and even off-ice conditioning and exercises. On November 1st, 1959, during a now iconic game against the New York Rangers, Plante was struck in the face by a shot which forced him to leave the game in order to get stitches. Unbelievably, Plante returned to the ice shortly after with his mask on, and managed to lead his team to a 3-1 victory. Although the Montreal Canadiens extended their winning streak to 18 games with Plante Leading them to their fifth consecutive Stanley Cup Championship. Many goalies adopted wearing the mask following Plante which resulted in a safer game and forever changed the way goaltenders played. His insistence on wearing a mask continues to influence the modern day goaltender.”
