‘While returning from a multi-day kayak trip to the remote Octopus Islands on the north coast of Quadra Island, my partner and I were paddling south bound when the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. My eyes locked on a powerful gaze from the shore. Standing firm behind a log on the beach was my first ever wolf sighting. As the wind was calm and the water flat, you could hear it sniffing the air trying to catch our scent as we drifted not 20 feet from shore. Once I got past the shock of being in the presence of a real wolf, I took in its mangy condition, large paws and modest disposition as it went about its exploration of the beach before disappearing back into the brush.
