Description

This replica performance poster and ticket is from one of Houdini’s last shows on October 22, 1926. Master magician Harry Houdini gave the last of a week of performances at Montréal’s legendary Princess Theatre on this date. He was relaxing in his dressing room at the theatre on Sainte Catherine Street before his final evening performance when he was visited by two McGill university students. The students were curious about his alleged magical powers, one of which he claimed, was that he could withstand any punch to the stomach. One of the students asked if it were true, and when Houdini confirmed the young man delivered a series of four punches to Houdini’s gut before the magician could tighten his muscles in preparation. Taken off guard, Houdini’s appendix ruptured, and his health quickly began to fail. Despite his pain he took an overnight train to Detroit for his next series of shows. Nine days later, Houdini died from the ruptured appendix after being rushed off stage in the middle of what would be his final performance. The print and ticket are doubled matted with a taupe top mat and black trim famed in a textured duo-toned brown
