Plaque Says:
(1942-1967) “The year 1942 marked the beginning of the Original Six era of the NHL back when it consisted of six teams. Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers. The league would remain unchanged for 25 seasons until six expansion teams were added in 1967. During the 1940’s the Toronto Maple Leafs were the dominant team winning the Stanley Cup Championships five times. The Detroit Red Wings were the team to beat at the beginning of the 1950’s winning four Stanley Cup Championships, although it was the Montreal Canadiens who closed out this decade winning five consecutive Stanley Cup Championships. Just prior to the expansion teams joining the league in ’67, the Montreal Canadiens had continued success with anothertwo Stanley Cup Championships victories which were preceded by three consecutive wins in the early ‘60’s by the Toronto Maple Leafs. The six new us-based teams added to the NHL in 1967 were the California (later Oakland) Seals, Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota North Stars, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and St. Louis Blues.“
